What is Allegory?

Allegory is an insurance technology company that is democratizing the insurance industry by using artificial intelligence and behavioural science. With our novel Insurance Score, drivers worldwide can prove that they are good drivers so that insurance companies can offer them better premiums. Similarly, Allegory gives insurers the tools to improve their existing insurance products or build entirely new ones with actuarial models that use behaviour and usage to price risk.

How can consumers use Allegory?

You can download and use the Allegory App for free to build your personalized Insurance Score in order to receive better auto insurance premiums from insurance companies. Like your credit score, but fair and transparent, we help you prove that you are a good driver. We help you improve your driving to avoid risks with Allegory Smart Coaching.

What is the Allegory Insurance Score?

You can think of it as similar to a credit score but instead of representing financial risk, it is a measure of your risk of getting into an accident. To build your Insurance Score, Allegory only uses factors that truly impact your driving, such as how you drive, what you drive, where you drive and how much you drive. We are committed not to use any factors that have nothing to do with your driving, such as your age, gender or marital status.

How does Allegory support insurers and brokers?

Insurance companies and brokers can leverage the Allegory Insurance Score to provide to augment existing policies or build new insurance products for their customers. We collect all relevant data (how you drive, what you drive, where you drive), analyzing thousands of data points, understanding how to use this data, and helping companies profitably price risk. We do the heavy lifting for you so that you can focus on your customers.

How is Allegory's business model different from a traditional insurance company?

Allegory is an independent insurance technology provider that supports the insurance industry to prevent accidents and bring fairness hence reduce premiums. Therefore, we will be only successful when all the good drivers get the premium they deserve.

What is the difference between your model and the current telematics-based products?

Unlike the existing solutions in the market, our focus is to understand the risk holistically. This means that we evaluate what you drive and how much you drive beyond your overall driving behaviour. We also help you to reduce your accident risk with Allegory Smart Coaching, improving your Insurance Score over time so you can also improve your premium.

How is Allegory structured?

Allegory Technology Inc. is a Canadian-controlled private corporation that is wholly owned by the current management team. Our management team has global experience in insurance, financial markets and engineering, who had previously worked at prominent organizations.

How do you calculate my Insurance Score?

We use four key components to calculate your Insurance Score. These are:

  • How you drive
  • How much you drive
  • What you drive
  • Where you drive

What factors do you use for the "How you drive" component?

Your "How you drive" component is based on an assessment of how consistently and safely you drive. Some of the major factors we use to calculate this score are attentive driving, fatigued driving, acceleration, braking, cornering and speeding.

What factors do you use for the "How much you drive" component?

Most traditional car insurance policies do not consider how much you actually drive when they calculate your insurance premium. Even if you drive less than average, there is a good chance that you pay the same premium as someone who drives three times more than you. With Allegory, the "How much you drive" component tells your insurance company if you are a low mileage driver and allows them to adjust their premium accordingly.

What factors do you use for the "What you drive" component?

The "What you drive" component not only covers the make, model and year of your car, but also takes into account the specific standard and optional features, including safety features, that your vehicle has. While features such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) can lower the risk of an accident, they can also increase the cost of a claim in the event of an accident. Allegory factors all of this information into the "What you drive," component of the Insurance Score.

What factors do you use for the "Where you drive" component?

Accident risk is strongly correlated with driving location; specifically, a relatively high proportion of all accidents occur in only a handful of locations. Depending on the frequency of accidents along the routes you usually drive, your accident risk can increase, impacting your Insurance Score. Allegory Smart Coaching can help you change your route in order to avoid relatively dangerous locations where feasible. Your Insurance Score is shared with your insurance company, with your prior permission, but at no time is your precise driving location ever shared with a third party.

Are you going to increase my rates?

We believe that insurance should be not about punishment, but rather prevention and protection. If you maintain the same level of good driving with a consistent Insurance Score, you shouldn't expect to see your insurance premium increased by your insurance company, although we don't have any direct control over their final pricing decision. What's more, we will be there to guide you on how to save more on your insurance premium with our Smart Coaching feature.

Why aren't you just using my driving record or demographics to calculate my Insurance Score?

Statistically speaking, demographics and driving records are secondary or tertiary factors when it comes to estimating a particular driver's accident risk, compared with primary risk factors such as how you drive, how much you drive, what you drive and where you drive. We are not interested in less accurate, potentially biased predictors and hence we do not use any proxies like your age, gender or credit score.

Will my postal code impact my insurance score?

Absolutely not. Your postal code has nothing to do with your driving. However, some auto insurance coverage, e.g. comprehensive coverage, need postal code information to identify fire or theft risk in your area to calculate an insurance premium. But this is entirely up to your insurance company.

How much of a discount can I earn?

As a general rule, the better your score, the higher the discount you can receive from your insurance company. Unfortunately, we cannot affect how much of a discount an insurance company will offer on an individual basis. Fortunately, our job is to help you get a higher discount on your insurance premium as possible. Therefore, we highly recommend you keep using the Allegory app continuously in order to prove to your insurance company you're a good driver that can receive better premiums, e.g. when your policy is renewed.

Are you using my credit score?

We are not using your credit score to determine your insurance score as it has nothing to do with your driving ability.

Will my car insurance premium increase?

Our job is to help you save on your car insurance premium. That's why we designed our entire product to help you to achieve this. Although discount and surcharge rules may vary by province, state or country, our experience shows that most insurance companies worldwide tend to provide discounts for safe drivers. In the end, it is 100% your choice to be a safe driver to save more on your insurance. We are just here to help you get the most out of it.

I am a safe driver and have not been in an accident for 25 years. My record should qualify me for a discount regardless of whether I rarely exceed the speed limit.

Allegory helps you to prove you are a good driver, and if you are, your insurance score will reflect this. In the end, we are all human, and we sometimes make mistakes. So long as you sustain consistency in your safe driving effort, rarely exceeding the speed limit will not impact your overall score.

How frequently are you going to change my Insurance Score?

We use a two-step approach in calculating your insurance score. The first is building your initial score over the course of a few weeks, and the second is updating it once a month. So long as you sustain consistency and follow the guidance given by Allegory Smart Coaching, you should expect to see improvement in your score every month.

My rate is already low.  Why should I use Allegory?

There is always some room for savings! You can show your insurance company that you are a good driver with low mileage to get additional discounts on your premium. Plus, there is more benefit to using Allegory than building an Insurance Score one time as we keep it up to date as your driving behaviour changes, or as your driving patterns change. If you start driving less, we can help you get your insurance premium to reflect that.

My car has a forward-collision warning system. Do you incorporate this into your scoring?

Absolutely! Most Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) are proven to reduce accident risk or prevent some risks entirely. Once you provide your vehicle's VIN (a 17-digit alphanumeric number) on the Allegory app, we can get all your car's standard safety features to determine your vehicle's safety score, part of our, "what you drive," factor.

How do you define safe?

Unfortunately, there is no global standard for what constitutes safe driving when it comes to behaviour-based insurance programs. However, there are certain behaviours that we have been proven statistically dangerous. For example:

- Using your mobile phone while driving, or inattentive driving,

- Increasing or decreasing speed more than 10 kilometres per hour in one second,

- Exceeding speed limits by more than 10% regularly,

- Taking a sharp turn with a lateral acceleration of more than 10 kilometres per hour in one second,

- Fatigue and impaired driving,

- Long night driving without enough rest,

- Speeding during adverse weather conditions,

- Driving faster or slower than the average traffic speed,

- Lack of anticipation of traffic lights or aggressive driving.

Am I going to be penalized if I accelerate to avoid a situation?

Since our scoring model considers your driving behaviour's overall consistency, we will not penalize you for rare acceleration and braking events.

Are you using an OBD2 device to track my driving?

No, we are not. Currently, we only use your mobile phone sensors to detect your trips and calculate your driving score.

Are you going to increase my premium if I have an accident?

With Allegory Smart Coaching, our goal is to help you prevent the preventable. Therefore, we hope that you will never get involved in a car accident. However, in the event of an accident the surcharge decision is up to your insurance company.

Will you increase my premium if I speed on the highway?

Our scoring model considers your driving behaviour's overall consistency, so it will not penalize rare speeding events. However, regularly exceeding speed limits will negatively impact your driving score and may or may not affect your premium, which is decided by your insurance company.

How do I get started with the app?

Download the Allegory App from the Apple App Store and follow the instructions to create and verify your account. If you have any difficulties, please send an email to info@allegoryinsurance.com, and we will be happy to assist you.

Which phones work with Allegory?

Our app is currently available for iPhone devices that run IOS 10.0 or later.

Do you charge any money for installing your app?

The Allegory App is entirely free for consumers.

What should I do if I forget my credentials?

If you can't remember your login details, please send an email to info@allegoryinsurance.com with your first and last name, as well as your verified mobile phone number. We will contact you shortly to confirm your identity and reset your account.

What should I do if I forget my password?

If you can't remember your password, go to the sign-in screen and follow the steps displayed after clicking the "Forgot my password" button.

Can additional drivers on my policy join Allegory?

Yes, they can. We highly recommend that you invite any driver who has access to your vehicle to download and use the Allegory App. This way, you can track the total mileage driven with your car and see how these other drivers are doing.

Do I need an OBD2 or black-box device to use your app?

No, you don't need an OBD2 or a black-box device to use the Allegory App or build your Insurance Score.

Do I need to change any settings on my mobile phone?

The Allegory App will ask you to enable location (GPS), motion & fitness, and notifications during the sign-up process. You should set the usage of location and Motion & Fitness sensors to "Always." Otherwise, we will not be able to detect your trips.

For IOS 13 and IOS 14:

  1. Open the "Settings" app on your phone.
  2. Scroll down, find and tap on the "Allegory" App.
  3. Click on "Location".
  4. Under "Allow Location Access", choose "Always".

As you drive, the iPhone system will raise location usage notification as part of their regular privacy check. You don't need to be worried about these notifications - we collect and process your location data as described in our Privacy Policy.

Do I need to keep the app open while driving?

The Allegory App runs in the background to detect any driving events automatically. Please don't forget to set the Allegory App's Location settings to "Always."

What counts as a trip?

Allegory counts any car journey that is more than 500 meters as a trip. We calculate the distance by using your mobile device's inertial odometer sensor and our proprietary algorithms.

My driving is mostly local. Is this worth trying?

Absolutely! Since our model uses distance as one of the premium determining factors, low mileage drivers can save extra on their insurance premiums.

How can I report a claim?

Allegory is not an insurance company; hence using the app does not mean that you have insurance with us. In the event that you are involved in an accident, please contact your current insurance company immediately. If you need immediate assistance, please call 911 and notify emergency services.

How do I use the Allegory Insurance Score?

The Allegory Insurance Score is available to insurers through a simple API call. For a given driver's license number, the insurer can see the current Insurance Score of that consumer - assuming they’ve given permission for their Insurance Score to be viewed.  This includes the overall Insurance Score, which is a composite score, as well as a set of individual scores measuring a driver’s calculated risk in terms of several primary factors: how someone drives, how much someone drives, where someone drives, and what a consumer drives. Since these scores correlate with the likelihood that they will get into an accident, this directly informs usage-based insurance policies and can be used to augment existing products or build new ones.

How is the Allegory Insurance Score licensed?

The Insurance Score API is licensed and priced on a per call basis. For an individual driver (i.e. driver’s license number), up to ten calls to the API in a thirty-day period will only be charged once. For additional details on Insurance Score pricing, minimum fees, and volume tiers, please contact sales via info@allegoryinsurance.com.

How do we get more granular detail on a given driver?

While the Insurance Score gives you a composite measure of an individual driver’s risk, all of the underlying data that is used to create the Insurance Score is available to insurers via the Allegory Smart Actuary product.  This includes a suggested premium for every driver in your portfolio, aggregated driving statistics (number of harsh driving events, etc.), date and location of any accident, cumulative expected portfolio risk, total liability, total exposure, change in risk over time, expected vs. realized loss ratio, and more.

How is Allegory Smart Actuary (ASA) licensed?

The ASA is sold based on an Enterprise License Agreement (ELA) covering an unlimited number of users for a given enterprise customer.  Any user covered by an ELA will be given individual access to the relevant information for their portfolio.  For more details on an ELA, please contact sales via info@allegoryinsurance.com.

What service levels are available for technical support?

Built into the price of the Allegory Insurance Score and Smart Actuary is technical support provided on a 5 x 8, best effort basis. Beyond that, please contact sales for additional technical support options, including professional services via info@allegoryinsurance.com.

What professional services are available for customizing our solution?

Allegory offers a suite of ad hoc professional services to ensure the success of any project involving the Allegory Insurance Score or Allegory Smart Actuary, and can include integration, training, or actuarial support.  Please contact sales for further details via info@allegoryinsurance.com.

Is my information confidential?

At Allegory, data privacy and confidentiality come first. We never share or sell your information for marketing purposes. As an independent technology company, we only share information, such as your Insurance Score, when you specifically give us consent. All of your data is stored in our secured servers, which are only accessible to company personnel responsible for server maintenance. For more information, you may refer to our Privacy Policy.

What personal information do you store?

We store your login details together with some other personal information such as your name, date of birth, profile picture and trip routes so we may calculate your scores and show them on the Allegory App. Allegory collects location data only when you drive, and under no circumstances does Allegory share this information with any third-party.

Collecting speed data is fine, but why are you collecting my location data?

We collect your location data only when you drive and use for the following purposes:

  • To display your trips on a map.
  • To retrieve the road type (e.g. highway, urban), posted speed limits, weather conditions, traffic conditions, and curves to calculate your driving score accurately.
  • To identify certain relevant driving events such as braking, acceleration and speeding.
  • To be able to dispatch emergency services in case of an accident or a car breakdown.

What security measures and standards does your company follow?

Our information technology (IT) infrastructure follows the list of assurance programs below:

  • SOC 1/ISAE 3402, SOC 2, SOC 3
  • FISMA, DIACAP, and FedRAMP
  • PCI DSS Level 1
  • ISO 9001, ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27018

For how long do you keep my personal data?

We keep your personal data as long as provincial and federal laws permit it, or until you request deletion of your account from our servers.

Are you selling my data or otherwise spying on me?

No, we do not sell your data or record your activity beyond what is required to calculate your insurance score. We are just a modern insurance technology company that strives to eliminate risks from your life and get you the best possible insurance premium.

What else do you do with my data?

We comply with all applicable legal requirements relating to data protection and privacy. We also follow strict internal rules governing data usage and storage. We do not sell your data to any third-party companies for marketing or other purposes. Could the data collected by Allegory potentially be used as evidence in a legal case?

Under no circumstances do we share your personal information with other individuals, enterprises or organizations (including public organizations and corporations) without your permission, unless applicable by law. The only exception is if we are compelled by a court order. We will share your information with government agencies if they need or request it.

What if my mobile device is stolen or lost?

If your mobile phone gets stolen, we urge you to contact us at privacy@allegoryinsurance.com as soon as possible. We will suspend your account immediately to prevent any unauthorized access to your data. Once you recover your phone or purchase a new one, you can download the Allegory app on your new device and log in to your account.

Can I ask to have my personal data deleted?

If you wish to have your data deleted, please send an email to privacy@allegoryinsurance.com. You must send this email from your registered email address and include your verified phone number too. Once we receive your request, we will contact you to confirm your deletion request. Please be aware that this process is irreversible, and you will lose all your past trips and progress, including your Insurance Score.

Can I stop using your app for a while?

Yes, you can. If you delete the Allegory app from your mobile phone, we will no longer record your driving behaviour. Once you are ready to resume, download our app again and log in to your account to retrieve all your previous trips and progress. However, please be aware that any interruption to regular app usage will impact your progress and may negatively affect your Insurance Score.

Why should I "always allow" location and motion services?

The Allegory app works in the background and detects your trips automatically. We check whether your location and motion changes indicate that you have started driving, and if so, we start recording your trip. No data leaves your phone during this initial trip detection process, but in order to work reliably the Allegory app needs to be able to access your device's location and motion data at all times. Without these permissions, we cannot generate a reliable Insurance Score or calculate an accurate premium.

Do you work with any company that also has access to my location data?

Allegory does not pass your location data on to any third-party provider. As well as safeguarding your information, this allows us to lower our costs and maximize the benefits we are able to offer our customers.
